Hey Guys! Congratulations! You`ve just released the new album “Warhorse”. Please tell us something about the last few weeks before the release.
Well..we’ve been doing lots of interviews and rehearsing hard for the upcoming promotion gigs. A few weeks ago we went to Italy for a Festival and just recently returned from Spain...keeping really busy.
It`s been a long time since you started with PICTURE in the late 70s. What is different today?
Nowadays there is a lot of different bands to choose from and its more difficult to get a good record company. This probably has to do with the internet and less CD sales and more downloads. Record companies are more cautious..Of course the internet also has its advantages..you can reach much more people in a short time if you have a good album.
Happily we found Artist Station records. They have a very unique concept where the artist has a big say in their own product..
What also is different is the wide variety of Metal today..We are still “Old school” that will never change
“Warhorse” is true heavy metal straight from the 80s. How would you define your music style?
Pure Old school..
It’s what we’ve always done and always will do..don’t expect us to come up with a new concept or style because I don’t think we could..Old School is what we were brought up on and what we know.Its what we still love ..Picture and Old school go “hand in hand”
The album was mixed by Oscar Holleman, who already worked with Evanescence or Within Temptation. Please tell us something about the mix sessions with Oscar.
We first had a listening session with Oscar to talk about what we wanted and to listen to the tracks..Then Oscar started his mix .When a track was finished he sent it to us and if we wanted things changed he did that ..we changed a couple of things by not much .He did great work and we are really happy with the way it turned out.
“Battleplan” is a great single release from “Warhorse”. Which other songs do you like most?
My favourites are “My Kinda Woman “ because of the groove it has..”The kink is losing his crown is also a favourite of mine...It’s difficult to choose because I like them all..
It’s like trying to choose between your children !!! hahahaha
You`ve recorded a new version of “Eternal Dark”. The song was also covered by Hammerfall. Do you want to remind people of the original version by PICTURE?
No not really..Our original version is 25 years old and the song has evolved ..it’s got heavier and we play it in a different key and we wanted to let people hear how it is now..also not many have eternal dark from Picture on CD ..but on vinyl..now they can hear it on CD.
PICTURE was propably the very first dutch hardrock band with a record deal. What do you think about the situation for new bands in heavy metal today?
It’s always been difficult in Heavy Metal and it doesn’t get any easier .We are lucky that we were there in the old days and have built up a name for ourselves throughout the years..If we had to start from scratch again I don’t think we would even get a Record Company..
New bands have to have something new to offer otherwise they will disappear in the masses of bands trying to get recognized...the completion is a killer today..
